The monsters have been sent home!

Yes, I sent home the monsters. I’m talking about the drawings and descriptions the students wrote, of course!

The Wonderful Ones had a fabulous Friday finishing up their project for the MUB contest with Fun4theBrain! All scanned pictures have been sent in and we have wrapped up our most successful project of the year.

The children’s writing really rose to the occasion this time. They started with drawings that were completed on Wednesday. They chose a monster on Thursday – one they thought could live and work in the Monsters Under the Bed town, then wrote their description.

Today, they took those descriptions and re-worked their drawings to the final stage. We scanned and uploaded pictures and recorded our stories all afternoon. They deserve a long restful weekend!

We are participating in an on-line monster project, so I know you want all the details!

We are entering a monster drawing contest for our friends over at Fun 4 the Brain! To get us ready, we asked Sadie’s dad (a real live artist!!!) to come and get our imaginations going with a monster workshop.

He read us stories and poems, brought monster books for us to look through, and really got us thinking about how to make our monster special by using our creativity.

“Mr. T” used our smartboard to show some examples, then he let us take turns adding our own features to create some class monsters. Everyone ended up with great first drafts, tucked away inside our journals to revisit tomorrow.

We will create a slide show of our best drawings when we finish, so check back to see what’s under your bed!

Antonyms are Opposites!

Today we discovered that we knew a lot about antonyms or opposites.

First we filled our smartboard with pairs of antonyms and then got with our couch buddy to think of more.

Then we used our wordle bucket (a pail of notepads and colored pencils) and collaborated with our partner to come up with 3 pairs of antonyms.

Last we entered our text into wordle and chose the design we liked best.

We challenge our blog readers to add a comment and think of three pairs of antonyms to add to our learning. Please leave them in your comment!

Antonyms are opposites!

Sadie’s mom made an antonym wordle for us! Let’s see if we can pair up those antonyms!

Well, after Parent Conference Day and In-service Day, I finally found a bit of time to upload our movie and pictures of Fall Fun Day into the blog.

Fall Fun Day was a success! We learned the Virginia Reel, heard a bluegrass band, learned from a bee keeper, heard Appalachian story telling and more. We have pictures and video coming soon. Stay tuned!
