It is a beautifully illustrated poem that we enjoyed over and over again.

We studied the pictures and thought we would try to make animals out of hearts. We tried to choose clever descriptions for our animals. Our efforts ended up in a photostory – uploaded into youtube.

So, please take a look at our innovation of Michael Hall’s book My Heart is Like a Zoo.

Spring with Frog and Toad

The Frog and Toad series are such great books! Don’t you love the chapter about Spring? Frog sneaks the April page right off the calendar to get Toad to wake up from hibernation. That makes me laugh each time!

Here is part of a theater production about this book. You’ll love the song!

Is it Spring Yet?

After yesterday’s April snow showers, I was hoping for more spring-like weather today. It looks sunny and hopeful out there today!

Here is a funny spring poem by A. A. Milne, the author of Winnie the Pooh.

Now, here is a song about spring time that you will really like – because we are Moose fans!

QR Code Magical Mystery Tour

This was our Smart Board background for the past week. We had been waiting to go on our Magical Mystery Tour with QR Codes and Friday was the big day!

We brought in the new carts of Mac Books. No one in the school had used them yet – how exciting!

After a brief lesson on the track pad and cheers of amazement after discovering the two finger swipe to scroll, we were ready to go.

We opened the QRreader, which connects to the camera of the Mac Book. It will be reading the codes on the cards I had prepared.

We had to spend a few moments looking into the QRreader – because in first grade it is fun to see yourself!

Then we were ready to tour! Everyone selected a card and successfully opened their first QR code. No typing in a long URL, no trying to find the correct website in a list on Portaportal, just point and play!

Now  watch the fun as we put it all together in our latest video!

What marks the spot?

Oh Wonderful Ones…

I am excited to have you guess what consonant we will be reviewing this week. Here are some video clues!

Please leave a comment with your guess and some example words that have that special sound!

Super Fun Friday!

We had a Wonderful Fun Friday!

We started with Jack’s mom as a guest reader for D.E.A.R. time this morning. Then we got very busy with our O.R.E.O. project. (Our Really Exciting Online Project)

We each had two attempts at stacking oreo cookies. We made our tally marks as we stacked, then compared our best attempt with our prediction.

We took pictures and Zaina narrated our movie. Then we added our new movie to our iPods so we can watch it over and over again. Here it is for you to enjoy!

OREO Project

We turned in our results online and got a certificate!

We had popcorn at lunch and watched our favorite story, Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. It was a great day!

Stay tuned to the blog this weekend for another episode of Chicken Jane!

To my Valentines!

Happy Valentine’s Day, Wonderful Ones!

Valentine message

Valentine message

This beautiful Valentine rainbow message appeared on my bathroom floor this morning just long enough for us to take a few pictures. I’m not kidding…

Come on, sing along with the Beatles!

And here’s a favorite book character (Timothy) in a Valentine’s Day show. This is posted in 2 parts. Watch both!

Wildlife Filmmakers in First Grade

Sadie, Sam, and Addison have been busy reading and researching animals. As they read their book, they collected interesting facts onto sticky notes. This week they took their sticky notes and put their facts into story form. Next we went to National Geographic’s Wildlife Filmmaker.

This is an easy way to make beautiful wildlife films. First they selected their film clips that matched their animals. Then they chose music that went with their theme. Next, their facts were typed in as captions, saved, and dragged onto the time line. Then the movie was ready.

I screen-captured the video with Jing and was able to grab an embed code for the blog (after some research!). Whew!

Presenting our first three Wildlife Films!
